Oilpainting “Contradiction”

is an artistic blend of Gay Art and religious themes. But why would someone paint such contradictions? Like many of the pieces in this gallery, I honestly don’t have a clear answer. It usually begins with one idea, then leads to another, and often ends in chaos. Most of my ideas come to me while I’m painting, and I don’t stop to evaluate whether they’re good or not. I just paint—I just do.

When the Oilpainting “Contradiction” was nearly finished, I had only the dress/jilbab left to complete. But it felt too clean, too obvious—a silly idea. I must have thought, “A naked butt alongside an Islamic woman… what a ridiculous idea.” From that moment, I began to disrupt the painting—scratching here, adding an extra brushstroke there. Then I decided not to finish the Islamic woman’s dress, leaving it as it was. I followed my instincts, and this was the result.

This painting is a perfect example of my work; I never know how it will turn out, and it always ends up completely different from what I might have expected.
